Life-Course Differentiation and De-standardization Patterns of Middle-Aged and Older Koreans
Woo Hae-Bong

Abstract
Using sequence analysis, this study examines life-course differentiation and detandardization patterns of middle-aged and older Koreans. Specifically, using the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), this paper empirically tests birth cohort (1929-48) and gender effects on quantified differentiation and de-standardization indexes. First, this study finds that the life-course becomes more differentiated across birth cohorts. In particular, compared to men, women show a faster pace of life-course differentiation. However, despite the decreased gender gap across birth cohorts, this study finds that the gender gap remains significant. Second, compared to life-course differentiation, the data do not show significant changes in life-course de-standardization across birth cohorts. However, similar to the gender divide in life-course differentiation, men and women show significantly different life-course de-standardization biographies. Overall, this study finds that men and women show distinct life-course shapes and paces in differentiation and de-standardization processes and that, despite increased educational and wage work opportunities for women across birth cohorts, women`s work careers are more likely to be interrupted than those of men.
